The development of inflammation and airflow limitation in COPD is related to oxidative stress, mediated by oxygen free radicals. The pathogenesis of COPD could be altered beyond antioxidant therapy. Considering low selenium (Se) plasma level in Latvian citizens add-on Se therapy was selected.
14 COPD patients received Se as SelenoPRECISE (PharmaNord) 200 mg daily as add-on therapy. The examination included life quality and laboratory data (Se plasma level, blood oxidation parameters) evaluation and was repeated after 2 months of Se supplementation. The results were processed under SPSS 11.0. Life quality improvement beyond Se add-on therapy was found in 85% of patients. Initial low Se plasma level (average 43+1.64mg/l) was accomponied by increased LP. Obvious relapse beyond Se supplementation was revealed- Se plasma level increasing for average 53.42+ 2.52 as well as decreasing of laboratory oxidative stress. Antioxidants that have good bioavailability are urgently needed to control the localized oxidative and inflammatory processes. Prolonged Se supplementation under laboratory control of Se plasma level could be recommended as add-on therapy. More trials wanted to assess any such beneficial effects and to provide further data on which to base more reliable estimates for intakes and plasma Se levels that are protective.
